The Ultrasound Technician operates independently and without direct supervision as the technologist is responsible for the performance and coordination of all ultrasound examinations. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs in a hospital setting all ultrasound examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performance of the examination requires proper alignment and position of the patient. Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers the transducer to perform the exam. The spectrum of examination performed includes, but is not limited to:
abdomen for tumors, stones, cysts, abscesses, hematomas, inflammatory lesions, such as pancreatitis, and sizes of organs and their location, evaluations of abdominal aorta for aneurysm and/or dissection, vascular ultrasound venous studies to r/o Deep Venous Thrombosis, peripheral arterial studies to r/o stenosis. Responsible for obtaining pertinent diagnostic examinations through knowledge of both normal and abnormal human anatomy. Performs a wide range of Diagnostic Abdominal Ultrasound examinations to include but not limit to the:
Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Appendix, Spleen, Kidney's, Bladder, Aorta, Portal vein, Doppler studies of blood flow to and from the major organs, this includes imaging of the scrotum and testicles. Performs Ultrasound examinations of the female pelvis to include both trans abdominal and transvaginal imaging of the Vagina, Uterus, Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes, and surrounding anatomy, as well as Breast ultrasound. Performs non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound examinations with Doppler interrogation to include but not limit to Carotids, Venous imaging of upper and lower extremities, Arterial imaging of the upper and lower extremities, Graft scanning for patency and stenosis, shunt scanning, vein mapping on both upper and lower extremities, Ankle Brachial Indices, and Penile Doppler for erectile dysfunction. Knows and understands the principles of ultrasound and the highly specialized equipment well enough to essentially approve the acceptability or reject ability of each scan. This includes:
preparation and supplies, scanning motions, TCG (Time Compensated Gain), Doppler, Doppler color flow, plethysmography, zoom or expansion, hard copy, picture-oriented examination, organ-oriented examination and initial interpretation the examination. Work Schedule:

In addition to meeting the requirements for GS-08, candidates must have had at least 1 additional year of successful and progressively responsible experience related to MIT (ultrasound technician) at the GS-08 level or equivalent. At this level the technician is required to perform a full range of procedures including special complicated examinations for which there are no standard instructions or procedures. They perform independent portable ultrasound examinations in the intensive care units, emergency room, surgery, and throughout the Medical Center when required. They also work independently on evenings, nights, and weekend tours of duty as scheduled and/or when on call. Assignments:
This position is above the full performance level; for all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Special Assignments:
Non-supervisory diagnostic ultrasound technicians may have assignments that because of their nature substantially exceed the full performance level. The Professional Standards Board will review proposed non-supervisory special assignments for the GS-9 level and make a determination regarding their appropriateness. These assignments are expected to be relatively few in number and must represent substantial additional responsibility over the full performance level. Preferred/

Certification:
Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable. Certification:

Basic Life Support Training is required for all staff having direct clinical contact with patients. Reference:

Incumbent performs a variety of Ultrasound procedures which require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the application of non-ionizing , high frequency, ultrasonic waves to humans for diagnosis of disease. Moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), walking (6 hours), standing (6 hours), repeated bending (2 hours), specific hearing requirements (specify) and emotional stability.
